About the Veterinary Clinic and Hospital
The Veterinary Clinic and Hospital is the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Melbourne School of Veterinary Science located at the Werribee Veterinary Science Clinical Centre. The Centre was officially opened by the Premier Sir Henry Bolte in November 1967. The Veterinary Clinic and Hospital is a Department in the Faculty of Veterinary Science. It is a teaching hospital, providing clinical teaching resources and instruction for students in all years of the Bachelor of Veterinary Science course. The Veterinary Clinic and Hospital operates like a large veterinary practice employing over 40 registered veterinarians from interns to senior veterinary registrars. In addition there are 5 veterinary consultants who provide expert health care services on a part-time and sessional basis. Further information about our Facilities, Staff and Clinical Sections is available. Approximately 17,000 animals are seen in the Clinic and Hospital each year. These comprise about 15,000 companion animals (small animals), mostly dogs and cats, and 2,000 horses. Of the companion animals, about 9,000 are primary accession cases (those seen for routine clinical problems and vaccinations), mostly from the local community, while about 3,500 are cases referred by veterinarians for further diagnostic work-up or treatment, and 2,500 are emergency and critical care cases, mostly arriving in the evenings and at weekends. Almost all of the equine cases are of a referral nature and are attended in the Hospital. In addition, the Hospital provides veterinary services to several equine studs. |
