General Enquiries
How do I make an appointment? If it is a routine procedure, please call us on +613 9731 2000. If you require a referral, please contact your local treating veterinarian first. Further information about making appointments is available. An appointment is required for routine elective procedures such as de sexing. You need to book approximately 1 week in advance. A drop off appointment time will be made for the day of the procedure. Most pets are kept in over night and discharged the next day. We do require that cats and dogs are fully vaccinated before being admitted to hospital. Where are you located? The Veterinary Clinic and Hospital (VC&H) is a Department of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Melbourne and is located at Werribee, Victoria. A detailed map of our location is available for your convenience. When are you open? Our General Practice is run on an appointment basis, operating from 8am - 7pm, Monday to Friday and from 9am - 4pm on Saturdays. Our Emergency and Critical Care section is open 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. Further information about our hours of operation and contact details is available. How does the Clinic and Hospital operate? The VC&H operates like a large veterinary practice employing over 40 registered veterinarians from interns to senior veterinary registrars. Further information is available regarding the clinical sections of the hospital and the full range of veterinary services we provide, together with profiles of our expert staff. The University Veterinary Hospital is fully computerised. Each pet has its own comprehensive life long medical record. This ensures that all veterinarians at the Hospital will have full details of your animal’s illness, and a complete record of treatments received. Your cat or dog will receive a thorough physical examination at the time of vaccination. Once vaccinated at this Hospital, regular reminders will be sent. In order to keep knowledge and skills up to date, all Veterinarians and Nurses regularly attend continuing education seminars and courses. As we are part of the University of Melbourne, we are involved with the training of student Veterinarians. Your first contact may be a student doing the initial check of your pet; please be patient with the students. Thereafter the Veterinarian will attend to your pet. What facilities do you have?We have both medical and surgical specialists on site. There may be times when the Veterinarian in the General Practice feels that it is appropriate that your pet to see a specialist. When this occurs, the specialist will take over you pets care and communicate with you. We are supported by radiology and anaesthesia departments, which have the latest equipment, and specialised personal to look after your pet. The Hospital boasts of having many of the latest equipment and procedures available to Veterinary surgery and medicine. What if my pet is hospitalised? If your pet required hospitalisation, the veterinarian will let you know when it is appropriate to call for an update. Your pet is very important to us, but it is difficult to take too many phone calls. Please elect one family member to be the contact person. There is a Veterinarian on duty all night. When can I collect my pet?Pets are discharged during consulting hours. A discharge time
will be made for you. What are your fees?We realise that your pet’s health problems can lead to major expense. We believe that our fees are fair and reasonable, and reflect the level of care and service provided. If hospitalisation is required, a written estimate of costs will be provided. However, you should be aware that it is not always possible to determine the exact cost of diagnosing and treating your pet’s problem when they are first seen. Please discuss the estimated costs with the admitting Veterinarian. If you anticipate a problem in paying your fees please let us know immediately. We do not want to create hardship for you, but you are responsible for your pet’s fees-there is no Medicare for pets! Payment may be made by cash, cheques, eftpos, or credit card. If paying by cheque, we will need full identification of the person signing the cheque. All accounts must be settled in full at the time of treatment.
