Central Sterile Supply
The Central Sterile Supply section (CSS) plays an integral part in the successful outcome of surgical procedures performed on animals in the University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic & Hospital Surgery section.
This unit is the only large dedicated CSS section in Veterinary Practice within Victoria.
About Us:
The Central Sterile Supply sections role is to provide surgical instrumentation and medical equipment that have been thoroughly decontaminated, disinfected and / or sterilised to render them bacteria free when they are used during your pets operation or medical procedure.
The team is fully versed in the assembly and use of specialised equipment such as Total hip replacement systems, internal plating systems interlocking nails sets, spinal decompression units, cardiovascular instruments and endoscopic equipment.
We are also able to boast a high level of instrumentation not available in most other veterinary practices and have the capacity to resterilise all equipment continually throughout the day. This means that we are able to do multiple surgical procedures on any one day.
The team closely follow the guidelines of the Australian standard 4187, entitled `Cleaning, Disinfecting and Sterilizing Reusable Medical and Surgical Instruments and Equipment and Maintenance of Associated Environments in Health Care facilities`. This Australian standard is the point of reference in all CSSD`s in human hospitals and we at the clinic and Hospital are happy to offer this same standard of care to the instruments used on your pets during their time with us.
The added value to our dynamic CSS nursing team is that they are all accomplished theatre nurses. Our patients have a highly skilled surgeon, assistant surgeon and anaesthetist, and every procedure also has a dedicated surgical nurse in attendance. The team provides nursing support to the wide range of surgical procedures that are presented to the Clinic & Hospital, such as soft tissue, orthopaedic and neurological cases.
