Anaesthesia
The Anaesthesia section looks after both small animals and equine anaesthesia throughout the hospital.
About Us:
The small animnal anaesthesia group is responsible for the anaesthetic care of patients presented to the surgery section. These are mostly dogs, cats and horses with the occasional rabbit, guinea pig, rat, ferret, bird or Australian native species.
These patients range from healthy, young patients admitted for sterilisation, to animals presented for complex referral surgeries such as orthopaedic, spinal, cardiothoracic and hepatic procedures. Geriatric patients and critically ill cases from our intensive care unit are also frequently anaesthetised.
Routine anaesthetic monitoring of all anaesthetised patients includes pulse oximetry, to measure the level of oxygen carried on haemoglobin in the blood; indirect blood pressure measurements, to monitor the patients circulatory function; and capnography, to evaluate the adequacy of breathing.
