Emergency and Critical Care
The emergency and critical care department provides a 24 hour service, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. The department has two areas of expertise: emergency treatment and intensive care. We provide after hours care for local pets when their veterinary clinic is closed, and 24 hour monitoring of the animals that are admitted to our hospital.
About Us:
First, we provide an emergency service for pet owners in Melbourne and from around Victoria. People can bring their animal to us at any time of the day or night if it is sick or injured. We are able to examine and, if necessary, admit animals to the hospital for ongoing tests and treatment. We routinely see animals that have been in fights, or been hit by a car. In summer we are busy looking after animals that have been bitten by snakes.
Secondly, we are able to give round the clock intensive care to our critically ill patients. There is a minimum of one vet and one nurse on duty at all times to make sure that the animals in the intensive care unit (ICU) are cared for constantly. Animals that are undergoing treatment for heart disease, kidney failure or cancer will sometimes need to be admitted to hospital to be stabilised.
As we are part of such a well-equipped hospital, the emergency department can perform a lot of tests on the weekends and after hours that might normally have to wait in a smaller clinic. We are able to perform x-rays and routine blood tests at any time of the day or night. We are also able to get endoscopy and ultrasound performed outside of usual business hours. We have experienced medicine clinicians and surgeons on call at all times to help us with special cases such as spinal surgery.
