Small Animal Dentistry
Did you know?
Adult dogs have 42 teeth and cats have 30 teeth. (Adult humans have 32 teeth). Our pets suffer from the same oral diseases that we do! Moreover, often they suffer in silence until disease is well advanced. You may not be aware that there is a problem in your pet' mouth until it is too late. Symptoms of dental disease in your pet may include difficulty with eating, lethargy or bad breath.
About Us:
The Service offers comprehensive dental treatments for your precious pets. Dr Anthony Caiafa is both a trained veterinarian and a dentist on both pets and humans. He has extensive knowledge in the field of Veterinary Dentistry and lectures to veterinary students at both Melbourne and Sydney Universities.
Some of the services that we provide include:
Management of periodontal disease (gum disease): gum disease can affect over 80 % of the pet population. Often pets show little or no symptoms of gum disease, until the disease is well advanced. Our dental service provides the most up to date treatment of gum disease that you would normally expect from your own dentist. This includes cleaning of the teeth, gum surgery or extractions if required. Advice on prevention or control of gum disease is also available.
Root canal treatment: dogs and cats are prone to breaking teeth and because their pulp (nerve) is very close to the top of the tooth, often the nerve is exposed when the tooth fractures. This often is painful for your pet as it would be for us if we break a tooth. Our dental service can provide root canal therapy, pulp capping or extraction for broken teeth.
Fillings: If required, tooth coloured fillings can be placed when teeth have been chipped.
Oral pathology: Management of more severe oral disease including oral cancer is available.
Oral surgery: Jaw fractures do occur in our pets. Our dental service provides the most advanced treatments available to allow jaw fractures to heal with minimum discomfort to the pet.
Dental radiology: Our service is one of only a few in Victoria that can take dental radiographs (X-rays). This service often provides us with more detailed information so that the best treatment choice can be offered for your pet.
